The physical and mental condition of people with dementia increases if they have regular companionship of a dog. That's the conclusion of researchers from the American University of Maryland, reported the site medicalfacts.nl recently.

University examined the influence of dogs on people suffering from dementia.
The elderly who participated live in a care facility in the investigation. Twice a week they took sixty to ninety minutes with a dog activities, such as walking, brushing, feeding and playing
The project lasted three months. The participating seniors were compared with older people who came into contact with the dogs.
The first group was, according to the researchers physically healthier, suffered less from depression and did more exercise. Gross and fine motor skills of the participating seniors would also be improved. The researchers argue that the research dementia may allow longer remain independent. This allows admission to a care facility take longer in itself.
The outcome of the study will be the people of the Therapy Dog Foundation Netherlands (STN) known to the ears. STN is committed to the use of therapy dogs in the treatment of dementia.
